History

The foundations of the Nagpur District Rifle Association were laid in 1984, at that time Shri. Chandrakant Deshmukh and few of his friends had returned from his farm after having spent the day in a target shooting session to hone their skills. During those days it was just a group of likeminded friends with the love of shooting and outdoors coming together to indulge in what was their favourite pastime.

There at his farm over tea and snacks, they were contemplating with the idea of indulging in such practice sessions more frequently, the casual talks led to a serious discussion on the future of the shooting sport and the lack of facilities, places to shoot and proper guidance to someone who wished to take up shooting as a sport seriously.

It was agreed by all present that to keep the sport alive some concrete steps shall have to be initiated, proper facilities and infrastructure will have to be created so that an aspiring shooter would have a proper range to shoot in addition to having guidance from experienced shooters.

Shri. Deshmukh was a keen rifle shot since his childhood, he was also a member of the National Rifle Association of India, his idea on the issue was also to introduce the upcoming generation to the safe and proper handling of firearms and for the same he proposed to form a District Rifle Association of their own. Amongst those present Shri. Ravi Parelkar, Shri. Jaivardhan Bahare and Shri. Subhash Khare, enthusiastically supported the idea and Shri. Deshmukh was vested with the responsibility of forming the rifle association.

The first available opportunity saw him travelling to Delhi to meet officials from the National Rifle Association for guidance on the issue, there he obtained a copy of the Memorandum of NRAI, this was to be the foundation on which the "Nagpur District Rifle Association" came to be based.
After return from Delhi a meeting was hurriedly convened and the first logical step, "Registration" of the to be formed association was decided to be undertaken, this needed a minimum of 11 members and the originators of the idea were short of this mark. In those days there were very few enthusiastic people in Nagpur city, who were willing to come forward for this sport, however a diligent campaign was launched and as many as 17 people willingly came forward for this cause.

On dated 07/05/1985 the said association got the much awaited registration under The Societies Registration Act and thus "THE NAGPUR DISTRICT RIFLE ASSOCIATION" having 17 members came to be formed. Renowned Orthopaedic Surgeon from Nagpur Dr. Satish Kale being the 1st President and Mr. Deshmukh being the General Secretary. The Association lost no time in obtaining a Arms License immediately thereafter.
